SCMA Delegation Attends MapuaWorld 2009

SCMA President Joe Rigonan led the SCMA group that attended the MapuaWorld event. The Texas Association of Mapua Alumni (TAMA) led by their President Bert Vicerra, BSCE ’66, hosted the four-day event in Houston, Texas. The festivities started on Thursday, March 12, with a Welcome Party and Mapua Tech Student Catholic Action (MITSCA) Night at the residence of Meredith and Norma (Rieza) Benzon, (BSAR ‘70) in Sugar Land, Texas. The following day,  Friday, was a rainy and cold day, but the show went on…the NASA Tour followed by “Texas Night”, the “meet and greet” at the First Filipino Methodist Hall in Houston. It was a fun-filled night of singing and line-dancing, Texas cowboy style.

Saturday, March 14, started with a seminar “Technology to the Marketplace” at the Hilton Houston Post Oak. Al Supetran, BSCHE ’70, Owner – ACS Manufacturing Company and Ben Ang, BSME ‘72, Owner – Solid Industries & Machine Shop Ltd. shared their success stories to a room-full of Mapuans and guests.

The Gala Night at the Hilton Houston Post Oak was the main event. The program started with the Parade of Colors (NAMA Chapters with their respective banners). There were special presentations from the chapters. SCMA presented a line-dancing number “S’Aimera”. Vancouver, BC, Canada delegates presented the most lively show “Hawaiian/Tahitian Dance” by the male members of NAMA BC. Guest Speaker Former Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco and Dr. Reynaldo Vea, Board Chairman and President of Mapua Tech respectively, were honored for their presence.

Finally, the picnic held at Eldridge Park, Sugar Land, Texas on Sunday, March 15, was most fun, memorable, and nostalgic. There were games (sipa, for one) that pitted the NAMA Philippines group against the US & Canadian groups. NAMA Philippines showed their superiority over their foreign counterparts beating them in all events. Saying goodbye was the hardest, so we make a vow never to miss one MapuaWorld again as long as we live. Calgary, Alberta, CN will be hosting MapuaWorld 2011. Will they surpass the hospitality, graciousness, generosity, and kindness displayed by the Texans? Abangan ang susunod na kabanata ng MAPUAWORLD!

SCMA ‘Meet and Greet’ March 7, 2009

The National Association of Mapua Alumni (NAMA) officers and members visited Southern California en route to the MapuaWorld event in Houston, Texas. SCMA hosted a picnic at the Carriage Crest Park in Carson, CA to welcome them.

The entourage included: President Rod Silvestre, Treasurer Art Cenal, Directors Rod Cannu and Max Daquil, Past President Glecy Estrella, Adviser Dolly Lim, Josefina Ramos,  Jo Recto, and their spouses/families.    Thoughtful and generous as ever, the group presented SCMA with NAMA hats which were raffled off to the local attendees and packages of dried mangoes. SCMA presented them with SCMA keychains and t-shirts. Edith Garcia-Ramos gave them gifts from Victoria’s Secret. Also present at the picnic were Ben & Lourdes Ang from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and the San Diego Mapua Alumni group led by Frank and Antusa Enriquez.
